PageCanaryBot

PageCanaryBot is Page Canary's website checker. If you see it in your logs, it visited your site to look for problems that affect your visitors, like an SSL certificate that's about to expire, a page that won't load, or a booking button that doesn't work. It identifies itself as PageCanaryBot in its user agent.

What it does

  • Loads your homepage and a few key pages (such as contact or booking) the way a visitor's browser would, on desktop and on a phone-sized screen.
  • Checks whether the links, images and embeds on those pages work, and reads your SSL certificate's and domain's expiry dates.
  • Taps the mobile menu button to check that it opens.
  • Follows your site's main flow (booking, checkout or signup) the way a customer would, up to the point of commitment. It may open a booking calendar or add one item to a cart, then stops at the date and time screen, the checkout page or the signup form.

Only when a site's owner has asked us to: sends one test message through the site's contact form, signed "PageCanary Test" and clearly marked as an automated test.

What it never does

  • Pay, book, place an order, create an account or log in.
  • Type personal or payment details into a form.
  • Send a contact form unless the site's owner asked us to test it.
  • Run security or vulnerability scans, or probe for weaknesses.
  • Make more than about one request per second to your site.
